Throughout the story, Animal Farm experiences various challenges, including a power struggle between Napoleon and Snowball, another pig who represents Leon Trotsky. The animals also face threats from neighboring farms and eventually become indistinguishable from the human farmers they initially rebelled against.

Animal Farm serves as a critique of totalitarianism and the dangers of unchallenged leadership. It explores themes of power, corruption, propaganda, and the perversion of ideals. Orwell's use of animals as characters allows him to satirize the Russian Revolution and totalitarian regimes in general.
