Following WWI the two young stars of the story were unable to find satisfactory jobs so they decided to become special investigators. Quite by accident they found themselves searching for a young woman who had been missing for five years who also happened to have in her possession a letter that could plunge England into another war. They were working for the government, but they would not be acknowledged if they got into any trouble. They each got into difficulty and were mysteriously missing for several days. Of course, as many golden age mysteries require, there was a secret villain that the reader is left trying to guess the identity of. After several twists and turns Tommy and Tuppence are able to solve the mystery, rescue the missing girl and save England.

Undoubtedly, Agatha Christie is the greatest mystery writer the world has ever known. She successfully developed four marvelous series, and Tommy and Tuppence are definitely fun to read. They had marvelous adventures and were also developed in a wonderful TV series. I am thrilled to own all of her books and never tire of rereading them. This book is the very beginning of Tommy and Tuppence's adventures, and I highly recommend it.
