Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is an autobiography of Harriet Jacobs, who grew up in the crucible of slavery in the American South. Writting under the pseudonym of Linda Brent, Harriet recounts her experiences in North Carolina, her escape to the North, and her struggles to free her children. Early serialization of the book in the New York Tribune was discontinued due to depictions of sexual abuse of female slaves that were considered too shocking for audiences at the time. It was finally published in book form in 1861.
